Since we learned that one of the most empowering protective factors for children is a stable and supportive relationship with a responsible adult, we have been very interested in how to empower adults to engage intentionally with their children. As a publisher, one of our priorities is creating resources that will help parents spend quality time connecting with their children.
Among many activities that adults and children can do together, reading books and sharing stories towers high in benefits. Through storytelling, children learn how to respond to novel situations, develop deduction and reasoning skills and learn new useful words. Stories help children build emotional skills and exemplify virtue in practice. Reading exposes kids to knowledge and prepares them for learning.
The question we’ve asked ourselves is, how do you ensure that reading books to and with children is not one more chore that an adult has to check off a list?
An effective way is to make the reading experience as enjoyable for children as they are for an adult. How do we do that?
By creating children’s books that adults too can read. 🤯
We want to foster intergenerational connections by crafting stories that will be as enjoyable for children as they are for adults, without complicating it for children or oversimplifying it for adults. We call these books CONNECT books.
The year has been an active one for us. We are learning by engaging CHILDREN, child development experts, storytellers, creatives, educators, parents and families. We are creating stories with existing and emerging technologies. We’ve added new authors to our household and cannot wait to share with you all that they have been working on.
Of course, not all kinds of books in the children’s genre will be like that, but we believe that the world needs more of these kinds of books, and we will create more of these kinds of books, God willing.
These books will cut across areas such as education, intellectual development, social and emotional learning, African stories, child development, faith and more. We are looking forward to the kinds of unique conversations that can take place when children and adults read the same books. Such books, as they release will be housed under a new imprint (announcing soon), and because we have a strong belief in this high-calling, we’re ready to put in the work.
We’re creating. And we can’t wait to share with you in Q3.
